Robotic Prostate Cancer Surgery

ROBOTIC PROSTATE CANCER SURGERY

It is one of the minimally invasive techniques to treat prostate malignancy compared to the conventionally done Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy (LRP) due to its probable benefits. It is also called as Davinci or Key hole" procedure.

In this special type of surgery, the surgeon operates through many small slits made in the abdomen and uses highly focused 3- dimensional viewing system. He sits comfortably near the operating board and controls the robot through its arms. This external machine (Robot) bends far better than the human hands and performs the surgery by the instructions given by the surgeon. It gives out a superior vision, accuracy, clarity and power.

The merits of Opting out Robotic Prostatectomy over the conventional Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy (LRP) are:

  • The malignant tissues are removed accurately.
  • The nerve-sparing procedure is performed concurrently as it enables quicker restoration in Erectile Dysfunction and Urinary Incontinence.
  • Minimal blood loss.
  • The need for blood transfusion is reduced.
  • Pain is less compared to the other surgical interventions.
  • The complications are much decreased.
  • The infection on the operated area is reduced.
  • The length of hospital stay is short.
  • Re-admission is not required in most cases.
  • Follow up after the procedure is not much needed.
  • Catheter is usually kept for a day or lesser than that.
  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) risk is reduced.
  • The recovery period is fast and you can resume to your normal activities quickly.
  • Damage to the nerves and rectum is very less.

This procedure can be done to all, except those who have undergone any major surgery in the abdomen or stomach. Spinal or general anesthesia is given to the patients and normally it takes about two hours to complete the surgery. The hospital stay will be around two to three days and the recovery time is seven to ten days.
