Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy(PCNL)
The renal stones which are huge and out sized can be treated by Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and it is considered to be one of the most preferred treatment options for complex stones. A slit measuring about half to one centimeter is made at the back underneath the skin and unique instrument is placed on the kidney and the stones are broke by using the ultrasound waves. It is done under general or spinal anesthesia and the hospital stay will be about two to three days. The recovery time is generally about one week. The surgeon after the procedure would leave a thin tube or catheter to collect the remaining urine.
Reason to Choose PCNL:
If the renal stone is more than two centimeter in diameter sometimes called as “Staghorn” calculi which are produced due to Urinary Tract Infections (UTI), the consultant may opt for it. Also, if the deposits are causing trouble in the urine output and if there is some urine collection inside your body or if the deposits are not treatable with Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) and Uretroscopy, this method is highly recommended by the consultant.
